CruzHim: The Scent That Works with Your Sweat
Most colognes are designed to cover up the way you smell. CruzHim wants to do almost the exact opposite. The men’s fragrance brand is leaning into something decidedly more intimate with Leather & Sweat, an oil-based, pheromone-inspired scent created to mingle with a man’s natural musk and body chemistry. Launched in 2025, the provocative roll-on grew out of founder CruzHim’s own unconventional fragrance habit, and the idea that sometimes the sexiest scent isn’t something sprayed on top of you, but something that smells uniquely like you. We caught up with the founder of CruzHim to talk about the inspiration behind Leather & Sweat, the science of skin-based fragrance, and why the brand is betting that men are ready to smell a little more like themselves.
GAYMPLAN: What is CruzHim?
CRUZHIM: CruzHim is a skin-based, pheromone-inspired fragrance created for men. Our first scent, Leather & Sweat, is an oil-based roll-on designed to blend with your natural musk and body chemistry instead of covering them up. It isn’t a conventional cologne or a deodorant. It’s a more intimate scent that becomes personal to the person wearing it.
GAYMPLAN: Where did this idea come from?
CRUZHIM: The idea came from a personal habit. I had been applying cologne to my underarms because I liked the way fragrance settled into my natural musk and changed against warm skin. The problem was that alcohol-based colognes could irritate my skin, while their strong synthetic compositions often overwhelmed my own scent. I wanted to develop something specifically for the body: an oil-based fragrance that would move with a man’s natural chemistry rather than compete with it.
GAYMPLAN: How long have you been selling it?
CRUZHIM: After several months of formulation and development, I launched Leather & Sweat in October 2025. As of August 2026, CruzHim has been on the market for nearly one year.
GAYMPLAN: How does it work? What’s the science behind the scent?
CRUZHIM: CruzHim combines traditional fragrance materials with androstenone, a compound that occurs naturally in human sweat and is generally found in higher concentrations in men. Some research suggests that androstenone may affect how masculinity, dominance, and attractiveness are perceived, although human chemosignaling is subtle, individual, and still being studied.
I’m careful not to present CruzHim as a magic attraction potion. Human beings do not respond to scent signals as automatically as insects or other animals respond to pheromones. The more tangible science behind the product is the interaction among fragrance, body heat, perspiration, and each wearer’s individual skin chemistry. As the oil warms on the body, the scent develops and becomes unique to the person wearing it.
GAYMPLAN: What are some of the ingredients that you can mention?
CRUZHIM: The scent includes notes and materials associated with leather, warm musk, vetiver, patchouli, and cocoa. It also contains civettone, a refined musk molecule valued in perfumery for its animalic warmth and depth, along with androstenone. The carrier base includes fractionated coconut oil, isopropyl myristate, and dipropylene glycol.
GAYMPLAN: Where do you apply CruzHim on your body?
CRUZHIM: It works best on warm areas of the body. I recommend applying it sparingly to the underarms, chest, back of the neck, lower back, or just above the belly button. The underarms are the signature application point because heat, movement, and the wearer’s natural scent help the fragrance evolve.
GAYMPLAN: How much do you need to use, and how long does it last on your body and in the bottle?
CRUZHIM: A little goes a long way. I recommend starting with a light application, approximately 2 to 3 swipes and allowing it to settle before adding more. CruzHim is intentionally a close, intimate skin scent rather than a fragrance designed to fill an entire room.
It develops over several hours, although longevity varies with body chemistry, activity, temperature, and application area. A 20-milliliter bottle typically lasts 1-3 months, depending on how often and how heavily it is applied.
GAYMPLAN: What do people first think when they smell the scent?
CRUZHIM: The first reaction can be surprise because Leather & Sweat doesn’t behave like a conventional spray cologne. People often notice a clean, warm musk with understated leather and earthy undertones. It sits close to the skin and feels intimate rather than loud or overly polished.
GAYMPLAN: What do people end up thinking once they try it on?
CRUZHIM: Once they wear it and give it time to develop, they begin to understand that their own body is the final ingredient. The scent becomes warmer, more rounded, and much more personal. Because it reacts differently with each person’s skin, two men can wear the same formula and produce noticeably different results. That transformation is usually the moment the concept clicks.
GAYMPLAN: Where do you get your materials?
CRUZHIM: I source my scent materials primarily from suppliers within the United States. The formula combines established perfumery materials with several more specialized ingredients. Every bottle is then produced by hand in small batches in my home lab.
GAYMPLAN: How hard is it to market a product like this?
CRUZHIM: It is challenging because CruzHim sits outside familiar fragrance categories. It isn’t a deodorant, and it doesn’t perform like a conventional cologne. You have to teach people how to apply it, why it sits closer to the skin, and why its development varies from one person to another.
The word “pheromone” also comes with skepticism and exaggerated expectations. Part of my job is explaining the product honestly: it isn’t mind control or a guaranteed shortcut to attraction. It is a thoughtfully formulated fragrance that works with scent, warmth, confidence, and personal chemistry.
GAYMPLAN: What challenges have you encountered since starting your business?
CRUZHIM: One major challenge has been producing a handcrafted product while keeping up with growing demand. Small-batch production gives me control over quality, but it also means that scaling must be deliberate.
Another challenge is communicating a sensory experience online. Customers cannot smell a digital advertisement, and this fragrance develops differently on every body.
GAYMPLAN: Do you have other products you’re developing?
CRUZHIM: Right now, my focus is on scaling the business due to growing demand, improving the customer experience, and growing the business responsibly. I have ideas for expanding CruzHim, but I want every future product to have a clear purpose rather than releasing something simply to expand the collection.
GAYMPLAN: Thanks for your time! Can’t wait to try it out!
