What the Hell Is Gaypeez? Inside San Diego’s Newest Play Party

Gaypeez Play Party Space

From themed looks and DJs to consent talks and community vetting, Gaypeez is bringing a high-energy, sex-positive twist to San Diego nightlife. We spoke with Kellen, the man behind the party, about where the idea came from, what makes it different, and why he believes playful chaos works best when everyone’s on the same page.

GAYMPLAN: Thanks for taking the time to chat with us Kellen. So we’ve been hearing about a new play party and that you’re the man behind it. We’re just gonna come right out with it: what the hell is Gaypeez, and where does that name come from?

KELLEN: Gaypeez is a sex-positive community—more than just a club—that fosters connection and play in a welcoming space. We also offer a community chat on Telegram that brings vetted people closer together, allowing them to form connections and enhancing the play party experience. The name Gaypeez is a playful nod, inspired by the success of our sister community, Soapies, a sex-positive space. Soapies is broader, and we created Gaypeez specifically for gay men. While there’s a tongue-in-cheek pun about “gaping,” it’s not just about fisting—it’s about all kinds of adventurous play.

GAYMPLAN: How did you get into starting play parties?

KELLEN: We got into throwing play parties because we came from both the rave/festival community and the sex-positive community. We felt traditional sex parties were missing something the festival world had: intimacy and bonding. We wanted to blend those worlds—slowing things down for connection, while elevating the vibe and play. While we emphasize meaning, there’s still plenty of sex happening!

GAYMPLAN: What’s the general vibe/ethos of a Gaypeez party?

KELLEN: It’s a throwback to old-school gay swinging with a Studio 54 flair—mixing disco, hip-hop, EDM, and lots of playful sex. It’s high energy, nostalgic, and all about wild, stupid, silly fun.

GAYMPLAN: What should people expect?

KELLEN: Expect about 90 minutes of mingle time with a DJ setting the vibe—what we call ‘play party foreplay.’ After a quick 10-minute consent talk, there may be a performance, and then the DJs start. You can enjoy the dungeon space, sex on the dance floor, sex toy rodeo, rigging swings, explore playrooms—basically, dance, play, and have a great time! You’ll find yourself flowing in and out of vibing, dancing, sex, and play.

GAYMPLAN: What should people wear?

KELLEN: Each month, we have a fun theme, and we encourage you to reflect it—something silly and vibrant. But no worries—in the end, we believe in wearing whatever the f*** you want, and having a great time!

GAYMPLAN: What should people bring?

KELLEN: Bring a small bag with essentials—condoms, Listerine strips, anything you might need. It’s BYOB, so bring drinks, and if you have favorite snacks, bring them—though we often have snacks. We have lockers and easy parking. Also, bring your own sex toys to enhance your experience!

GAYMPLAN: I’ve heard there’s a short talk about consent. What’s that about?

KELLEN: Our consent talk ensures everyone feels comfortable. We recap safety guidelines, emphasize asking consent before advancing anything, and remind everyone it’s okay to give and receive no’s. It’s about keeping everyone safe and respected.

GAYMPLAN: What is this vetting process I’ve heard about?

KELLEN: Our vetting ensures everyone is safe, easy on the eyes, and fits the vibe. We ask for three clear photos, confirmation they’ve read our safety guidelines, and we do a 5-10 minute call. This ensures we’re on the same page—making sure they’re right for us, and we’re right for them—so we welcome people who truly fit.

GAYMPLAN: Where are Gaypeez parties held?

KELLEN: Gaypeez parties are held monthly at a rented venue in Kearny Mesa. In the summer, we also host ‘Sets on the Beach’ at Black’s Beach—bringing DJs, shade tents, and hosting a 100- to 300-person nude dance party. We have four beach events scheduled this year.

GAYMPLAN: How much are tickets?

KELLEN: Early bird tickets are around $40, regular tickets about $60. We also run promos—like if you buy a ticket, you can bring a vetted friend for free. We’re all about serving the best community and making it attainable to most.
